CSS B Grade Boys Rugby Team On Song at BOCHK Rugby 7s Cup Pool Stage

As the reigning Hong Kong champion of 2017-2018, the B Grade Boys has a reputation to live up to and target on their backs. Since a few star players have moved to A Grade, the current team requires rebuilding with a few fresh athletic students and reshuffling on the potential starting lineup. A chance for some silverware still exists if the Maroon & Grey can overcome tough pool matches in the up & coming BOCHK Rugby Sevens Cup 2018-2019.

The B Grade Boy's first pool match tournament took place on 19th January 2019. As the holder of Hong Kong Island/Kowloon Schools league 2017/2018, the boys entered the tournament with high morale, confidence and aching to cause havoc on field. The team started off with a convincing win over HKSYCIA Wong Tai Shan Memorial College (WTSMC) with a final score of 33-0, while Brian Lau (F4.Bo) capped off his first appearance with a simple walk-in try. In contrast, the team had a shaky start in the second game against Po Chiu Catholic Secondary School (PCCSS), where they were pinned down in their own 22 for a good 3 minutes. However, thanks to great defence effort by Conor Young (F4.Bo) and Axyl Clarkson (F4.Ja), the team seized an important turnover and capitalised with a coast to coast try by Morgan Powell (F4.Ju). CSS continued to apply pressure in the 2nd half and overpowered opposition with a final score of 31-0.

Building momentum from previous two games, the B Grade Boys entered the last game of the pool stage with killer instinct. A staunch defensive effort in the first 10 seconds from kick off against Choi Hung Estate Catholic Secondary School (CHECSS) led to jubilant scenes under the sun as the Maroon & Grey began the onslaught. Footballer convert - Thomas Enk (F4.Ju) snipped down from the blind-side of the scrum, side-stepped and over the white line with a pre-planned set piece opened up the floodgate. Morgan Powell continued with his excellent form and individual athleticism, he managed to score his first ever hat-trick. The final score was 43-0. CSS B Grade Boys Rugby Team finished off on the top of the pool A table and will progress to Cup / Plate Knockout stage on 23rd February 2019.
