Coco and Edith, students from Form 6 Cassia and Form 4 Jacaranda, respectively, introduced some interesting background information on Major Snow (大雪). They also talked about some major activities people will do during this period and introduced the upcoming activity - Making & Eating Sweet Dumplings (Tang Yuan).

Coco: Good morning, everyone! We’re the CLACH ambassadors. I’m Coco from F6 Cassia.

Edith: 我是中四藍楹社的Edith。

Coco: Edith, are you ready for cold weather this weekend? Did you know that in some northern regions of China, it’s already snowing very heavily? My friend, Chris, in Heilongjiang, told me that it’s the start of Daxue, or “Major Snow”. Do you know what that is?

Edith: 當然知道啦，「大雪」是24節氣中的第21個，大約在12月6日至8日之間。根據古代記載：「時積陰為雪，至此栗烈而大，過於小雪，故名『大雪』。」隨著天氣逐漸寒冷，雪會下得越來越大。

Coco: No wonder we have to eat warm food all the time during Minor and Major Snow. Traditionally, people eat sweet potato porridge to help stay warm and fill their stomachs.

Edith: 除了飲食，在起居方面我們也應該順應「秋冬養陰」，宜早睡晚起，好好保養身。

Coco: In terms of our health, as the weather gets colder, people like to close their windows. But it’s still necessary to open them from time to time for better ventilation and to avoid stale air circulation. It can also relieve the body and mind.

Edith: 那麼，你是否知道在「大雪」的時候，人們通常會進行哪些活動呢？

Coco: That’s an interesting question. I want to know what activities people usually do during a major snow!

Edith: 通常有「小雪醃菜，大雪醃肉」的習俗，他們會醃製臘肉、香腸等。在北方的人更會進行觀冰、滑冰、賞雪景等活動。在古代也有「踏雪尋梅」、「烹茶煮雪」等雅興。

Coco: Wow, that’s really interesting! I want to go ice skating too!

Edith: 是的，一邊溜冰，一邊感受冬天的氣息，真的很不錯。大雪這個節氣，確實是一個與家人圍爐取暖的好時機，希望大家能在這個寒冷的天氣裡，與家人度過一個美好的冬天。

Coco: The Major Snow is a perfect time for families to gather around and keep warm. We truly hope everyone can have a lovely winter with their loved ones during this cold weather!

Coco: Great! It’s freezing outside, so we definitely need something warm to cozy up! Next Tuesday, that is the 16th of December, the CLACH Ambassadors will be making and eating sweet dumplings (Tong yuen) with everyone in the 2/F Food Tech Room during lunch time, 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM.
