Today is National Constitution Day as the nation celebrates the promulgation of the Constitution of the People's Republic of China on 4 December 1982 by the 5th National People's Congress.

This morning, Creative Secondary School raised the National Flag, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Flag, and the School Flag on campus. Our Principal, Mr. Stephen Hindes spoke about how national security connects to our daily lives.

Principal's Speech

Today is "National Security Education Day." There will be different activities to help us all understand its importance throughout today and tomorrow, but I would like to start by talking about an invisible "Great Wall" protecting our economic and financial security.

Economic security is our ability to eliminate and reduce potential risks and resist external financial shocks, ensuring sustained and healthy development of the national economy - including industrial structure, employment, and stable prices.

Hong Kong SAR serves as a financial hub.  A vital bridge connecting global markets and the mainland. Financial security maintains a healthy financial environment that involves regulatory systems, financial infrastructure, financial institutions, as well as control and prediction of financial risks.

Global supply chains and fluctuations in international markets impact our systems. Strategically from a government standpoint, it is essential to balance development and security to guarantee the long-term stable development of the economy and finance.

How can we all do our part? We can participate in this process by:

  1. learning about economics and finance and building risk awareness,

  2. guarding against scams and fraud,

  3. supporting local/domestic products and consuming rationally, as well as

  4. improving your skills so you can contribute to the community in the future.

Through these four actions, you can see that national security protects, and can be protected through, everyone's daily life. Let’s not forget, however, that the double-edged sword of technology can make this process easier or pose additional risks.  In a way, we need to build up ‘Great Firewalls’ here too.

Critical thinking skills and a healthy dose of scepticism are essential in this AI world. While robotics and travel are rapidly changing, and tasks like studying are becoming easier, risks include deep fakes used for fraud.  As an ethical person, we must do our best with the 4 actions I listed. We must take time to figure out what is real and not, and ensure we do not become entangled as victims, or in the temptation to try some of technology’s darker possibilities. If not for the community benefit, then to avoid potential repercussions to ourselves.

Take care not to reveal personal information online, be vigilant about information, and don't forward or repost unverified content. These seemingly small actions impact national security. You could be being fooled, and later held accountable for your actions.

Your national security responsibility, and your part, spans your online life as well as IRL. Let’s keep our communities safe and support a stronger future.

As an IB World School, understanding national security helps us become responsible citizens. Together, we can create a brighter future.
