“Introduced in September 1991, the Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS) was set up in response to the recommendations of the Education Commission in its Report No. 3 and approved by the Executive Council. Under the DSS, schools are allowed to have greater flexibility in various areas including resources deployment, curriculum design and student admission, etc. Besides government subsidies, DSS schools may collect school fees for the provision of additional support services and school facilities”

Q: What are the advantages of attending a DSS school? 問:就讀直資計劃的學生有甚麼得益?


A: Students attending a DSS school have the advantage of enjoying education of a higher quality by paying a reasonable school fee while being subsidised by government funding. A DSS school receives a government subsidy for each admitted student, based on the average unit cost of a school place in a government aided school. With more flexibility and additional resources, they can cater for students with different needs.

A: We offer high quality education - a world class curriculum, inquiry-based learning, small classes, exposure to large numbers of native English speaking as well as bilingually fluent teachers. There is a wide choice of elective subjects as well as ample activities and opportunities for students to develop their potentials and personal qualities, supported by advanced learning facilities and excellent advice for tertiary education.

CSS is an award-winning Inviting School, providing an exceptionally caring school culture with a high teacher to student ratio of around 1:9. Other schools offering a similar level of quality such as Private Independent or International Schools have to charge higher fees because they do not receive a DSS subsidy.

Q: With so many overseas teachers and being an IB World School, isn’t CSS’s school culture just like that of another international school? 問:啓思中學有這麼多海外老師,又是一所「國際文憑組織世界學校」 (IB World School),那麼,學校的文化是否與其他國際學校一樣?


A: CSS’s unique school culture blends in the best of Chinese and international educational ideals. The school caters overwhelmingly for students whose families are rooted in Hong Kong, as well as students whose families have returned or are from overseas.

The CSS staff team consist of teachers from Hong Kong as well as from all continents of the world. 75% are natively fluent in English, 40% in Cantonese and 15% in Putonghua.

Over a third are natively fluent in more than one language, and there are fluent speakers of over 15 other languages. This diverse yet blended team makes CSS very different from international schools who rely overwhelmingly on teachers from a few English-speaking nations.

We encourage our students to be globally-minded in their outlook and at the same time respectful of their own culture and heritage. In fact, more than half of world’s IB study in state schools and not international schools as many would think. Many international schools are actually just schools with a national culture operating in an overseas location.

Q: What is CSS’s expectation on students’ standard of English and Chinese? 問:學校對學生的英文及中文程度會有什麼期望?


A: Our approach to learning & teaching requires students to participate actively in exchange of ideas in class and during other activities. At the most basic level, a student should develop good listening and speaking skills. In addition, students at CSS often research for information, organise their thinking and present their findings clearly in writing, orally and through video. Students will become more versatile and fluent as they practise using English in all their subjects.

We have a similar expectation on students’ Chinese language fluency. Students are encouraged to develop a strong Chinese reading habit. Chinese is taught through the medium of Putonghua in junior forms. In senior forms students can choose Putonghua or Cantonese to study for their external Chinese exams.

Q: How can CSS help students to effectively and promptly improve students’ fluency and versatility in their languages? 問:啓思中學如何有效並立時改善學生的語文流暢程度和多樣性?


A: The school’s staff team has around 75% who are native English speakers level teachers including around 25% who are overseas returners, teaching all subjects across the curriculum. Together they help students to reach a proficient level of English as early as F1 and F2.

In Chinese Language, lessons are conducted interactively to create interest and enjoyment. Students learn Chinese through the study of literature, including classics. In the lower forms, Chinese language courses are taught through Putonghua medium from F1 and F3. As a result, their Putonghua will become progressively more fluent. Chinese in Form 4 and above can be taught in Cantonese as an option.

Besides the language curriculum, students also read every lunchtime at school, and can participate in language-related co-curricular activities such as debating, public speaking and stage performances etc. All F1 and F2 students study drama in English as a compulsory subject. Drama is available as an elective subject up to F.6.

Q: Are there any policies to cater for students with different standards of proficiency in English and Chinese when they join the school ? 問:當新生加入啓思中學時,學校有哪些政策配合他們不同的英文及中文水平?


A: The school offers 1st language courses based on literature study, in both English and Chinese, to students with native level of fluency in either or both languages. Bilingually fluent students benefit from studying Language and Literature courses in both English and Chinese.

We also offer 2nd language courses to cater for students whose Chinese or English are not at native level. The school carefully assesses each student’s language background, skills levels and progress, and offer them the appropriate courses accordingly.

Students who need intensive English tuition to gain good access to the curriculum are supported by our Centre for Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) where they are offered focused learning support individually or in small groups.

HKDSE and IBDP 香港中學文憑試及國際文憑預科項目

Q: Why does CSS offer the HKDSE and the IB Diploma programmes (IBDP)? 問:為什麼啓思中學同時提供香港中學文憑試 (HKDSE) 和國際文憑預科項目課程 (IBDP)?


A: All DSS schools principally offer the HKDSE and can also offer non-local curriculum as an option. CSS offers the two Diplomas because they are differently designed for students with different aptitudes & aspirations.

From Form 1 to 3, all students study the Hong Kong curriculum delivered through the IBMYP framework and pedagogical approach.

The IB MYP’s inquiry-based approach to learning provides them with a strong academic foundation, including critical thinking and other generic learning skills, as well as enjoying ample opportunities to widen their global outlook and develop into positive, open-minded, responsible and effective all-round learners.

At Form 4, when they would have the necessary maturity to consider their elective subjects, future tertiary education and career, the school will discuss with students & parents before deciding which Diploma is to be offered to them.

當學生達到中四階段,心智上會較成熟,在開始考慮選擇選修科目以及未來升學和職業路向時,學校會先與學生及家長商議,然後決定為學生提供哪個文憑試課程給予學生修讀。




Q: What types of CSS students are suited to follow the IBDP? 問:啓思中學哪類型的學生適合修讀國際文憑組織預科項目 (IBDP)?


A: The IBDP requires students to study 6 subjects plus the 3 core components - Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity Activity and Service (CAS). 3 out of 6 subjects are studied at a more challenging Higher Level (HL) and the other 3 are studied at Standard Level (SL).

The 6 subjects must include:

  1. The study of a literature course
  2. The study of a second language or a second literature course
  3. The study of a mathematics course
  4. The study of at least one science subject
  5. The study of at least one humanities subject
  6. The 6th subject can be an arts, humanities or science course

CSS Students applying to study the IBDP must achieve at least a Level 4 grade or above in their Form 4 DSE course to study a subject at Higher Level, and achieve a Level 3 or above to study a subject at Standard Level.

The IBDP is a demanding and sometimes inflexible course and may not suit every student. The reasons are:

  1. The critical study of a large number of literary works (in Chinese or English at CSS) may be too challenging for some students who have no passion for literature.
  2. Students must have three strong subjects that meet the 3 Higher Level requirement.
  3. Students who do not wish to study any science, or any humanities subject, will not meet the IBDP’s requirement.
  4. Students need to conduct independent research for the Extended Essay and regularly produce substantial amounts of coursework, not just sit the final exams.
  5. A student cannot opt out of CAS, or not meet the minimum grades for ToK, Extended Essay or the HL & SL subjects, or else the student fails the whole Diploma.
  6. Certain subjects or subject combinations are only available in the HKDSE e.g. 3 Sciences; or 3 Humanities ; Humanities or Arts or Design Technology + ICT + Physics combination; or Visual Art , Physics & Design Technology combinations (e.g. for architecture). For details of elective subjects offered in CSS, please refer to our senior curriculum brochure.

In order to be successful, IBDP students are expected to be strong all-rounders, keen on literature, strong on using English for academic study, very disciplined in time management; strong in critical thinking and research skills, and resilient throughout the two year course.

問:國際文憑組織預科項目 (IBDP)課程,要求學生選擇修讀6個學科以及3個必修核心組合項目,包括「知識論」 (TOK),撰寫一篇「專題論文」(EE),並完成「創意、活動與服務」(CAS) 項目的要求。而6個學科中,學生必須選擇3科以「高級程度」(HL)修讀,以及3科以「標準級程度」(SL)修讀的科目。

啓思中學學生如要申請選讀IBDP課程,必須於中四DSE的考試中,達到第四級或以上的成積級別,才合資格選修同科的IB「高級程度」(HL)科目。另外,學生要在中四DSE的考試中,達到第三級或以上的成積,才合資格選修同科的IB「標準級程度」(SL)科目。

國際文憑組織預科項目 (IBDP)課程是一個高要求而有時不夠靈活性的課程,因此可能不合適一些學生修讀,原因如下:

  1. 要深入修讀大量文學作品 (在本校是中文或英文),可能對某些對文學沒有太大興趣的學生,會感覺太吃力。
  2. 學生須要有最少三科成積優良的科目,才合資格選修同科的IB「高級程度」(HL)科目。
  3. 學生如不願意選修任何一科科學科或人文科科目,並不符合修讀國際文憑組織預科項目 (IBDP)課程的要求。
  4. 學生須在平日課程期間,獨立地研究及撰寫一篇「專題論文」,以及定時完成大量其他課程作業,而不是僅靠課程終結時的公開試成績。
  5. 學生必須要完成「創意、活動與服務」(CAS) 項目的要求,同時在「知識論」 (TOK)的學科裡,必須要考獲合格的成積級別,否則整個IBDP預科項目課程會被視為不合格。
  6. 某些科目或科目的組合,只有在香港中學文憑試課程內提供,例如:修讀三個科學系科目;修讀三個人文系科目;人文系或美術系科目,設計科技 + 資訊科技 + 物理科;或視覺藝術 + 物理 + 設計科技的組合(適合未來在大學修讀建築系學位)。有關啓思中學提供的選修科目之詳情,請參考本校的高中課程小冊子。

Q: What types of CSS students are suited to follow the HKDSE? 問:啓思中學哪類型的學生適合修讀香港中學文憑試 (HKDSE)?


A: The HKDSE is designed to challenge the most able students as well as provide opportunities for all students to be successful.

Almost all CSS students are suited to follow the HKDSE, except for those who wish to study certain subjects only offered in the IB Diploma (e.g. Film, Theatre).

HKDSE offers more flexibility in numbers and combinations of elective subjects, because it is designed for a wider spectrum of students with different aptitudes and interests. Literature is an optional elective, not a compulsory course of study. Studying fewer subjects or not passing any elective does not prevent a student from achieving the Diploma requirements for entrance to Hong Kong or overseas universities and tertiary education institutions.

The HKDSE at CSS therefore offers the opportunity for both all-rounders as well as those with focused interests (e.g. only sciences, only arts) to be successful.

絶大部分啓思中學的學生均適合修讀香港中學文憑試,除非是那些希望選讀只有學校的IBDP課程才提供的科目,例如電影科和戲劇科。

Q: What are the benefits of studying HKDSE at CSS? 問:在啓思中學修讀香港中學文憑試有何好處?


A: We offer students an effective English language learning environment through our large number of native English speaking teachers. Students learn interactively in small classes and receive close individual support & supervision from highly caring and effective teachers.

At CSS, 13 HKDSE elective subjects are offered – History, Geography, Economics, BAFS, Design and Applied Technology, ICT, Technology and Living (Food Science and Technology), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Music, Visual Art, English Literature – much more than most schools. Students are given free choice of these electives as they enter Form 4.

Our Higher Education advisory team has an excellent track record in maximizing students’ prospects to gain entry to good universities and colleges locally and overseas.

A: Students and parents describe school life at CSS as happy, vibrant, exceptionally warm and friendly, full of opportunities and choices. Teachers are caring and understanding, respectful and trustful of students.

The academic programme of the school is rigorous yet stimulating, relevant and engaging for our students. Students enthusiastically participate in school life including a wide variety of co-curricular activities. There is a strong sense of belonging and ownership of the school among its students, teachers, parents and alumni.

Q. What is so unique about the pastoral care & personal development of students at CSS? 問:啓思中學對學生的關顧和個人發展有何獨特之處?


A: CSS takes a holistic approach to foster all-round development of each student – personal, social, moral, academic and physical. This is implemented through a unique Student Development & Well-being framework, which consists of the Vertical House System complemented by horizontal junior and senior school sections.

House tutors are supported by Heads of Schools and the Director of Student Development and Well-being, together with guidance counsellor, Social Worker and Careers & Higher Education Counsellors. Together they oversee students’ academic progress, personal development, conduct & discipline as well as their social & emotional well-being.

The Student Development & Well-being team designs and delivers an age-appropriate Personal Growth Programmes (PGP)in the form of lessons and projects, as well as an Experiential Learning Programme (ELP) consisting of co-curricular activities, Creative Week, Study Tours and Overseas exchange programmes etc. All the above programmes are designed to foster students’ development and widen their horizon throughout their teenage years.

Tertiary Education 專上教育

Q: What is the proportion of places that Hong Kong universities will reserve for HKDSE & IB diploma students? 問:本地大學會為HKDSE及IBDP的學生預留多少比例的學位?


A: Both Diplomas are well accepted by local universities. HKDSE students enter Hong Kong universities through the JUPAS scheme, which accounts for around 80% of Hong Kong university places. IBDP students enter Hong Kong universities through the non-JUPAS scheme. Together with other students from China and overseas, as well as Hong Kong students who have studied other non-local qualifications such as UK A Levels, the non-JUPAS scheme accounts for the remaining 20% or so places.

Q: How successful are CSS past graduates in entering universities and colleges locally and overseas? 問:啓思中學的畢業生成功考入本地及海外的大學和學院的入學率有多少?


A: We publish our graduates’ tertiary education destinations every year on our website. On average around 93% of our graduates have entered tertiary education over the past few years.

Q: What is CSS’s general criteria for admission? 問:啓思中學的招生準則是怎樣的?


A: CSS expects potential Form 1 students to be proficient in their academic subjects at primary school, as well as possessing a positive attitude and a lively & broad interest in learning. They should be confident communicators and be motivated to learn through the medium of English.

F2 to F5 students will be given additional written assessment tasks in addition to an interview.

答:啓思中學要求獲取錄的中一學生於小學階段的各個學科有良好的成績,並擁有積極的態度和濃厚而廣闊的學習興趣。他們能夠與人有自信地溝通,並能積極地通過英語媒介學習。

至於中二至中五的學生,除了面試以外,須參加筆試評估。




Q: Will priority be given to CPS graduates? 問:啓思中學會否優先考慮啓思小學的畢業生?


A: The founding mission of CSS is to extend the quality education of CPS into the secondary stage, enabling its students to continue their education under the same philosophy. We also welcome students from other schools.

答:啓思中學的創校使命是為了延續啓思小學的優質教育至中學階段,以讓學生能繼續接受相同理念的優質教育。我們亦歡迎來自其他小學的學生入讀本校。
